Empowering Students:

The Next Generation of Change

Working Towards Change (WTC) is a volunteer initiative that connects teens with meaningful opportunities to support local and global causes. We help students build empathy, leadership, and purpose along the way. WTC is funded by the Head Toward College Foundation, a 501(c)(3).

Volunteering is so much more fulfilling when doing it in community with one's peers.

Through purposeful experiences, our teen volunteers are inspired and empowered to be changemakers through experiences that help develop teamwork, communication, time management, and problem-solving skills.

What We Do

We believe that the best ideas for improving our communities come from students themselves. Through our Working Towards Change Initiatives and student-driven Do Good Projects, we provide a platform for students to design and lead service initiatives that reflect their values, creativity, and skills, helping them strengthen their sense of purpose.

Our Key Initiatives:

Food Pantry Support

Students organize food drives and community meals, partnering with local organizations to identify high-need items and collection efforts

Green Threads

A student-run thrift and bookstore that promotes sustainability, entrepreneurship, and community access to resources.

Forgirlsake

A partnership with forgirlsake.org, a grassroots movement bringing girls and women together to support and educate girls in need.

Fundraising Events

Students design and execute events, gaining experience in leadership, project management, financial planning, marketing, and event execution.

Do Good Projects

Students develop and plan individual or group projects that reflect their interests and values, address real community needs, and inspire positive change.

Past projects

Check out some of the 2025 projects

Little Free Library

What started as a project to help bring books to elementary students, grew into a permanent free lending library in front of the pre-school at Newton North High School.

Soup for All

This winter our students gathered to fill mason jars with all the mixings for a hearty soup to complete their winter Bags of Kindness donations to the Newton Freedege.

Cans for California

After learning about the devastating fires in Southern California our student leaders set out to raise funds for the first responders. Gathering friends and family members they collected cans and recycled them for a cash deposit.

Crocheting for a Cause

Our more creative students gathered each month to crochet hats and squares to bind together to create blankets for cancer patients at Dana Farber Hospital.
